The Marmalade gigs 1966-1970

Welcome to another posting of a series of gig listings for 1960s bands. None of these lists is exhaustive and my idea is to add to them in the comments section below over time. They are here for future researchers to draw on.  I have also added a few interesting bits of information and will add images in time.

I’d like to encourage band members to get in touch to share memories, or for anyone to send corrections/clarifications to my email: Warchive@aol.com

Equally important, if you attended any of the gigs below or played in the support band, please do leave your memories below in the comments section for future historians to use. If you know of any missing gigs, please add them too, if possible, with the sources.

The group started life as Glasgow group, The Gaylords who went through numerous personnel changes over the years.

According to Wellingborough News, The Gaylords became The Marmalade on 9 September 1966. However, booking agents continued to book them under their former name for some time, including a show at the Dungeon Club in Nottingham on 16 October and the Witch Doctor in St Leonards, East Sussex on 5 November (see below).

    1. 9-10 December 1968 – Annabel, Sunderland, Tyne & Wear (Newcastle Evening Chronicle) My now husband proposed to me in the middle of this gig, we’d only known each other 3 months, we’ve been married 55 years. Fond memories of Marmalade and Annabels

  2. Marmalade appeared twice in December 1968 at Morecambe central pier.
You show boxing Day 26/12/68 but they also appeared on New year’s Eve 1968,

  3. I played with a band called Julians Garden from Inverurie, Aberdeenshire, in the late 60s. W e supported The Marmalade in the JM Ballroom in Dundee in December 1970 but can’t find any record of it. The promoters we were booked through was STAG Entertainments based in ABERDEEN and ELGIN (Gordon Hardie and Albert Bonicci). Can anyone help. Thank you.

    1. Perhaps could be helpful trying to get in touch with Gordon who runs this excellent website about Dundee gigs https://dundeegig.weebly.com/
Sorry also for my curiosity but perhaps during your activity with your band did you met or played with (in Scotland) English rock bands such FREE and GENTLE GIANT ? Thanks for your memories !

  4. I was in a band called The kontax, later JJBender and the S O S, and we played with Marmalade at Wolverton Palais at around late 1967 I was impressed at how they looked on the night, took them aged to get ready.

  5. One of the best bands ever..loved seeing them at the Dorothy in Cambridge & always Rhodes centre in Bishop’s stortford.

  6. Probably my first ever concert was on 12th Feb 1969 at Fairfield Hall, Croydon. Marmalade were the main attraction for me, and by then they had had 2 or 3 hits. The cheapest tickets were in the choir stalls behind the stage, but the secret was to book seats at either end where the stalls would curve around to the side of the stage and we could look down sideways on, but it didn’t matter. It was just great to see performers live rather than on tv. The other acts had their own style of course, and although I’d never heard of the Iveys, we had to wait another year before they came to fame as Badfinger. Wonderful times.

  7. Could have sworn I saw Marmalade at the Festival or Queen Elizabeth Hall on a bill with others in late 60s or early 70s but can’t find any record of this.
Remember in 1969 (Jan 13) seeing Tyrannosaurus Rex, Roy Harper, David Bowie miming and Stefan Grossman (good guitarist).
If not on that bill, within 2-3 years of that.

  8. I saw The Gaylords in the Town Hall, Downham Market, Norfolk, on a Saturday night. I know I would have been at least 14 about 1966. Couldn’t find it on your list. Never forgot it. They were great.
