The Love Affair gigs 1966-1970

Welcome to another posting of a series of gig listings for 1960s bands. None of these lists is exhaustive and my idea is to add to them in the comments section below over time. They are here for future researchers to draw on.  I have also added a few interesting bits of information and will add images in time.

I’d like to encourage band members to get in touch to share memories, or for anyone to send corrections/clarifications to my email: Warchive@aol.com

Equally important, if you attended any of the gigs below or played in the support band, please do leave your memories below in the comments section for future historians to use. If you know of any missing gigs, please add them too, if possible, with the sources.

I saw them at the locarno(Mecca) Sunderland many times as my sister worked there,Steve Ellis pulled her wig off when they were having a laugh..I always think of my sister Margaret(she sadly died 5 year ago ) though most of the 60,s music remind me of her the love affair rainbow valley does the most, great times great place to be….First time I saw Rod Stuart was there to I even took my younger sister years later to see the bay city rollers,I retreated up stairs to Genevieves…ahh good times.

  4. Saw them in Liverpool in 1968, I was 16 and madly in love with Steve. I bought their first LP and didn’t even have a record player.

  5. Hi, I am sure love affair played in Ayrshire Scotland, they stayed in hotel in kilmarnock Ayrshire, he gave me the jumper he was wearing, any info please, thank you.

    1. Hi, William, I think my previous inquiry about the group performing at the Grand Hall Kilmarnock and your comment about receiving the singer’s jumper are indeed linked. What do you reckon? Do you remember which month this was and was it in1968?

    2. My friend said that she saw them in ayrshire late 60s ( steve ellis was still lead singer )but haven’t got anymore info

  6. can anyone settle a discussion. I say the answer is no but did the love affair ever perform at chasewater park near cannock in Staffordshire.some are saying they watched them but I don’t ever recall them playing there .if they did I don’t think Steve Ellis was with them .they say it’s the 60s or late 60s all info welcome thanks.

On November 29th 1968 the love affair played the pavilion ballroom in Keswick not the central hotel, the support group were a local band called Sunshine Express, (my only claim to fame) I played bass.

  9. Love Affair played in late spring 1970 at a festival near Lille, France. My band (|Room) was also on the bill. Can’t say I remember much more about it. Anyone recall that festival?

  10. Saw them at The Winter Gardens Weston-super-mare in ,1968. Steve Ellis leaping up onto the piano springs to mind. Many great nights spent watching top ten bands at the Gardens in 68/69. Great days

    1. May 10th 1968 my then 17year old sister bought me a ticket to join her, her friends and my bestie at Sunderland Top Rank Suite. The ticket was for my birthday which was May 13th. I was 14 and very lucky 😊😍. Steve had a brand new pair of black and white baseball boots on to which he threw into the audience and my bestie being tall grabbed the one coming our way ☺️ Then Rex Brayley threw his orange striped scarf into the audience and again my bestie caught that. 10.30 that evening we were sitting at our kitchen table cutting the baseball boot in half so we both had half each and the same with the scarf 😃. We took them wherever we went.

    2. Sorry for my curiosity but did you attend also a gig played 30 October 1971 in Weston Super Mare – Winter Gardens by English Progressive Rock band GENTLE GIANT ? Also did you attend any show played by English rock band FREE (internationally famous for their hit “All Right Now” of 1970) in Weston Super Mare or elsewhere ? Thanks for your memories

  13. Camping in Cornwall 17 July 1968, with best friend Ian (RIP). Saw Love Affair at the Winter Gardens Penzance. Great show, I remember the singer swinging from some overhead bar, very cool.

  14. My band – Harlem Shuffle was the warm-up band supporting the Love Affair at the Kilmarnock Grand Hall circa 1968. I can not remember the month but I know it was a follow-up gig after the ‘Everlasting Love’ hit. Wish I could trace the exact date. Can anyone help here?

  15. I felt sure I’d seen them in a poll winners’ event at the Empire Pool, Wembley, either 1969 or 1970, but I may be wrong.
