The Pretty Things’ gigs 1963-1969

Welcome to another posting of a series of gig listings for 1960s bands. None of these lists is exhaustive and my idea is to add to them in the comments section below over time. They are here for future researchers to draw on.  I have also added a few interesting bits of information and will add images in time.

I’d like to encourage band members to get in touch to share memories, or for anyone to send corrections/clarifications to my email: Warchive@aol.com

Equally important, if you attended any of the gigs below or played in the support band, please do leave your memories below in the comments section for future historians to use. If you know of any missing gigs, please add them too, if possible, with the sources.

  1. They played on Paris on 1st June 1967 at the Festival Of Pop Music (see youtube footage of Children / Reincarnation)

  2. Hi Nick
    A couple of corrections –
17 April 1964 Plaza Ballroom, Guildford not Civic Hall
11 June 1965 Plaza Ballroom, Guildford not Civic Hall

    1. I found a few Pretty Things gigs. Not sure on dates. This first gig came via the Pretty Things autobiography ‘The Pretty Things Growing Old Disgracefully’ by Alan Lakey.

They started out as Jerome and the Pretty Things named after Jerome Green the friend and maraca player for Bo Diddley. After a few gigs they shortened their name to the Pretty Things. At a gig at the Station Hotel in Dartford they were advertised as the Pretty Things. The first drummer was another art school friend Peter Kitson.

Some info came from an article I have been putting together on the Pretty Things.

September 1963: The Inferno Club, Sidcup, Kent, England
      The Pretty Things début gig.

September 1963: The Station Hotel, Dartford, Kent, England

1963: Unknown venue, Manchester, Lancashire, England
The Pretty Things first big gig.

1963: The Black Prince, Rochester Way, Bexley, Kent, England

1963: The Bromley Court Hotel, Bromley Hill, Bromley, Kent, England

December 1963: The Royal College of Art, Kensington Gore, South Kensington, South West London, England

This gig was a week later.

Monday, September 14, 2009, Isabel Hospice, Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, England of stomach cancer) was asked to take over the recording sessions, this resulted in Viv Andrews leaving the Pretty Things in Late April 1964. His drumming was OK but sadly he just could not handle being on stage. The band’s first single release was shelved until they could find a replacement for Andrews. Jimmy Duncan felt that an important ingredient was missing from the band and that an experienced drummer was needed. He would inject the professionalism that was lacking in the group. Duncan knew who he wanted and that was Viv Prince (b. Vivian St. John Prince, Saturday, August 9, 1941, Loughborough, Leicestershire, England). He needed persuasion to join the group as he was busy with lots of session work and had turned down a number of bands including The Kinks. By way of enticement Duncan offered him £40 per week and a brand-new set of Ludwig drums. He joined and Prince remembered that the first week he received £8.

On Christmas Eve, Saturday, December 24, 1966 Pendleton phoned the band to tell them he was leaving the Pretty Things. He had got married in 1964 to Christine, the band being blissfully unaware that he had married, also his wife had just had a baby boy Philip Pendleton and he was also financially broke. His wife was one of three mousy girls that used to hang around with the band. It was not just the financial side, Pendleton was psychologically shattered, as three years on the road was a hard life. He admitted he had had some sort of breakdown.

In March 1967 Stax also left and was replaced by Wally Waller on bass, Framus acoustic guitar, vocals, wind instruments, piano (b. Alan Edward Waller, Sunday, April 9, 1944, Barnhurst, Kent, England) and the Pretty Things were also joined by Jon Povey on organ, sitar, percussion, vocals (b. Thursday, August 20, 1942, London, England).

According to the Melody Maker music paper of Saturday, April 29, 1967 on page 5 Allen and Povey had joined The Pretty Things.

Stax like Pendleton had become disillusioned with the band’s non-R&B direction and disliked the new style songs written for their new album, only playing on two tracks. They were not playing Stax’s favorite 12 bar Blues. Stax later went on to join Denny Laine’s Electric String Band and was also joined by the Pretty Things old drummer Viv Prince.

On Friday, June 13, 1969 Dick Taylor left the Pretty Things and on Saturday, June 14, 1969 he got married.

In June 1969 Taylor was replaced by 23-year-old lead guitarist Vic Unitt (b. Victor B. Unitt, Friday, July 5, 1946).

Between September 1969 and June 1970, the Pretty Things recorded their album ‘Parachute’ at Abbey Road Studios, St. John’s Wood, North West London. It was produced by Norman Smith (b. Thursday, February 22, 1923, Edmonton, North London, England d. Monday, March 3, 2008, East Sussex, England).

  3. This is a great site – Thank you. You mention that the 1964 gig at the Embers in Harlow is unlikely. However, I can confirm that the Pretty Things definitely played there and the date seems about right. I am sorry to say that my memory is not good enough to confirm this.
I seem to recall seeing Dick Taylor play with the Rolling Stones in the early days.

  4. I was a regular at the 100 club on Tuesday nights for the pretty things back in 1964 ,the support band was the Artwood combo, though many years later,in the 90s if I remember correctly, I ran into Arthur Wood at the Ealing blues festival and when I mentioned this to Arthur he told me that they were the headliners and the pretty things were the support. I think he was mistaken! I also saw Bo Diddley,Duchess and Jerome play there round about the same time.

  5. I saw the original Pretty Things with Viv Prince inManchester in 1965 an d the 23 July 1966 at Torquay Town Hall a really great gig and a great time to be young and in the ’90s with the SFSorrow’ line up. The first Pretty Things album is a rock/blues classic a great live band RIP Phil May

  6. The Pretty Things played in the Casino, Scheveningen Holland) on 27 March 1967 (Phil May, Dick Taylor, John Stax and Skip Alan). Great concert, but only lasted for 25 minutes and were thrown out of the hall, because Skip had ruined the decor on the stage. This was there final concert as a 4 piece band. Great memories!
I also remember they played the famous Paradiso, Amsterdam Holland on 29 March 1969. Great performance and it was recorded by the Dutch Radio station VPRO.

    1. Thanks. This is great as it gives a clear indication of when John Stax departed and the two members of The Fenmen joined.

  7. Hi Nick, if you need any info about the band, you can always ask me and I will try to answer. I am a fan since 1965 and had a very personal relationship with them for a long time, also because I managed there fanclub in Holland. I treasure all those memories! Take care. Bye for now.

  9. Hi Nick, here are 2 more dates you can put up in the list:

    October 27th, 1969 – Amougies Festival, Belgium.

    Best Regards,
    Robert

  10. Hi Nick,
    Here some more:

Casino Scheveningen, The Hague, The Netherlands, Saturday October 8, 1966.

    Greetings,
    Robert

  11. Hi Nick, two more dates to add:

    • 23 November 1969 5 p.m. – Friedrich-Ebert-Halle, Alter Postweg 34, Hamburg-Harburg, West Germany with Fat Mattress and Steamhammer

    • 23 November1969 8 p.m. – Star Club, Große Freiheit 37, Hamburg-St. Pauli, West Germany with Fat Mattress and Steamhammer

  12. Hi, I remember going to this gig as my gran got me tickets (she was a cleaner at The ABC Regal) – May 1965 – ABC Hull, Hull with Billy Fury & The Gamblers, Dave Berry & The Cruisers, Brian Poole & The Tremeloes and The Zephyrs. I don’t remember Dave Berry or Brian Poole and The Trems being on but I do remember The Pretty Things and The Rocking Berries. When Billy Fury came on the audience booed and he cut his set short. Fury had come to the end of his career as a top liner by then I think and the kids just wanted to see and hear groups.

  13. Hi ! The Pretty Things performed at Cheam Baths on Friday 3rd December 1965. The gig at Eel Pie Island, on 7th February 1969, was cancelled at the last minute because the band’s equipment could not be transported over the bridge, to the venue, due to ice. The Pretty Things performed a free gig, at Parliament Hill Fields, on Friday 29th May 1969. During The Isle Of Wight Festival on Saturday 30th August 1969, the timings and order of the acts were changed at the last minute, which meant that The Pretty Things came on after The Who.

  14. February 1st 1965- Warrington Parr Hall. I was 15 and went with some friends from school. The Pretty Things were our favourite band, and we were delighted when we were asked if we could stay behind and sit with them on stage, while they were interviewed by, I think it was a German magazine or TV.

We couldn’t believe our luck, and would love to know if there is any record of this interview.

  15. My friends and I went to see the Pretty Things in a small hall somewhere in Minehead (we were staying at the Butlins Holiday camp there)
This would have been June or July 1967 – sorry, I can’t be more precise than that!
