Formed by musicians living in Catford in southeast London, The Heads formed in late 1966 and were featured on page 2 of The South East London Mercury on 20 April 1967 (see photo above).
Richard London may be the same musician who went on to Joe E Young & The Tonicks in 1968 while Clinton Creary, who was originally from Jamaica, definitely later played with Black Velvet.
Around June 1967, the band changed name to The Stax.
We’d love to hear from anyone who can add more information in the comments below.
Hello Nick ,I hope your doing well ! All is fine my end , Yes this is the same Richard London alas „Nose „ If ever you contact him ,kindly pass it on to me . Cheers
It would be great to hear from any of the Stax members from that time. I was the tenor sax player (Ian Aitchison) they recruited from a band called The Joint with Rick Davis who later formed Supertramp.
The Stax was resident at the Starlight club in London 1967/68 and we backed Ben E. King when he performed at the Starlight club. When he sang Stand By Me the roof lifted off! I will never forget that experience as I was the only white guy in the club that night.
I only performed with the Stax for a short time, then joined The Greatest Show On Earth, a prog-rock band signed to the EMI/Harvest record label. We had a number 1 hit in Switzerland with Real Cool World. I have great memories of those times.
