Amen Corner gigs 1966-1969

Welcome to another posting of a series of gig listings for 1960s bands. None of these lists is exhaustive and my idea is to add to them in the comments section below over time. They are here for future researchers to draw on.  I have also added a few interesting bits of information and will add images in time.

I’d like to encourage band members to get in touch to share memories, or for anyone to send corrections/clarifications to my email: Warchive@aol.com

Equally important, if you attended any of the gigs below or played in the support band, please do leave your memories below in the comments section for future historians to use. If you know of any missing gigs, please add them too, if possible, with the sources.

  1. They performed at the Market Hall Haverfordwest on 3rd May 1969.and on the 5th October 1968 of which I have the original poster.

    1. I saw them on 4th Oct 1969 at Boston, I also have the original poster, I saw Andy at a Blues festival 3 yrs ago , he was brilliant!!

      1. Me too! Ran away from home in Southport when I was 16 and ‘jumped’ trains across the country. ‘Borrowed’ £5 from Mum’s purse! Grounded for a month when I returned home but so worth it!

    2. Sorry for my curiosity but did you if English rock band FREE (internationally famous for their hit “All Right now” of 1970) played in Haverfordwest – Market Hall between April 1968 and October 1972 ? Thanks for your memories !

  2. Wonderful resource for us Amen Corner fans. Jason has kindly posted this link to the Amen Corner Facebook Group and I have made as announcement so it is kept at the top of the page. Brilliant!

  3. The band was named after The Amen Corner, a weekly disc spin at the Victoria Ballroom (later to become The Scene Club) in Cardiff, Wales, where every Sunday night Dr. Rock would play the best soul music from the United States.

  4. There’s an ad in the Melody Maker 1 August 1969 indicating that Amen Corner were supporting The Who at The Marquee, Brentwood Road, Grays, Essex on Saturday 23 August.

  5. Amen corner played in the ice rink, Kensington, Liverpool. It’s not there now. I was so in love with Andy and as a young girl played At fainting at the concert , was body lifted above crowd and put on stage by my idol… soon to be escorted off, but I touched him 😘😘😘😘😘😘😘. This would be around 1966-68

    1. I did that too at the last gig in 1969 in Boston! I thought it was the end of the world that they were breaking up. Got arrested by the police for trying to hitch hike home to London as well!

    1. Sorry for my curiosity but did you saw in concert in Netherlands English Rock band FREE (internationally famous for their hit “All Right now” of 1970) between 1969 and 1970 ? Thanks for your memories !

  6. I attended my first open air concert with Amen Corner in Dunmore Greyhound Stadium in Belfast . I believe it was during 1969 but I cant find the exact date.

    1. I seen them in 1969 at Dunmore Stadium in Belfast too. I remember being chased down the Antrim Road as I was making my way home to the Shankill. Par for the course back then. Despite that it was a great night. Did Love Affair also play that night or did I just imagine it? It was the time I started smoking weed so I m not sure of all the details. I don’t remember the limo but that’s probably one of the details.

  7. One of the first gigs I went to (15 years old at the time) was Amen Corner at Newark Rugby Club on 23/8/1968. Such a great band – big, ballsy sound with the twin saxophones, and highlighted by Andy F-L’s unique voice. Not sure why he didn’t play guitar in those days, as he is so highly regarded nowadays.

    1. Sorry for my curiosity but did you attend other rock shows played in Newark Rugby Club in those years ? Such FREE (Internationally famous for their hit “All Right Now” of 1970) ? Also GENTLE GIANT and YES (both English progressive Rock bands) ? Thanks for your memories !

  8. I was a member of a group in the mid sixties called The Pad. We were the support band that night for Amen Corner at the Greenwich Town Hall SE10. Cannot find any record of the performance at Greenwich Town Hall at all.

    1. That does not surprise me as I was there manager and agent back then and I got Bend Me Shape Me a big HIT but they never mention me at all the groups back then had no class our gratitude in them.

  9. 6 July 1967 – Ritz Club, Skewen, Wales with The Goode Time Review (Port Talbot Guardian) Billed as Amen Corner Show…At last we are remembered (The Goode Time Review)…Singer-Greg Curran, Lead guitar-Dai James, Bass guitar-Alan fingers Jones, Drums- Anthony Stone…We only had Selmer 50 amps and were always borrowing the other bands equipment with grateful thanks..usually from The Eyes of Blue….Whenever I see Andy now with Eric Clapton I think of those early days…in the 60’s and 70’s……Dai James now 74.

  10. My Name is Ron King and I was the Amen Corner manager and agent and I got the number Bend me Shape Me a Hit as nobody wanted them and I took them and I got it on Top Of The Pops that’s what got them there, if there is any doubt about what I have said I am still in touch with one of my past secretaries who still lives in England and is still involved with some of The Amen

  11. That does not surprise me as I was there manager and agent back then and I got Bend Me Shape Me a big HIT but they never mention me at all the groups back then had no class our gratitude in them.

  12. I went to see Amen Corner 1st May 1968 at Odeon in Manchester, the first band I went to see, I was about 14:and was in love with Andy Fairweather Low. Bend me Shape me was in the charts. Great times.

  13. I remember seeing Andy Fairweather Lowe in the main ballroom at The Dorothy in Cambridge on 25/03/69. Amen Corner we’re soooo big then.
I still love Wide Eyed And Legless.

    1. English Progressive band GENTLE GIANT played at The Dorothy in Cambridge 24 June 1971. Did you attend also this show ? Thanks for your memories !

  14. When Amen Corner played at The Sunday Club, Addlestone, on 12th February 1967, I was there, at my first live band gig and aged just thirteen. The Sunday Club (old Co-op building) was the hub on a Sunday night for playing blues, soul and Tamla Motown for hundreds of people who attended from miles around and the Amen Corner were fantastic!

  15. I remember seeing them at the Winter Gardens, Weston S Mare approximately 1968/69.
Andy Fairweather Low held my hand briefly, I have never forgotten them. My son bought me there CD about 5 years ago.
