Joseph C. Pereira, author of Legends of the Golden Venus, will be contributing rare oddities to Garage Hangover from time to time.

I have attached a picture of a band from Madras called Mustangs. Must have been a Mustangs from every country in the world.

I spent time in Chennai visiting second hand book stores and a few shops selling old vinyl, which is where I got this Mustangs single.

The record was released in 1968 I guess because “Love Is Blue” is present. The line up is Derek Norris (sax), Kittu Rufus (lead), Darryl Cordeiro (rhythm), Haroon Mohamed (bass), S. P. Ananth (drums).

The songs are “Love Is Blue”, ‘Lies”, “Nina’s Theme” and “Summer Wine”. The style though is restrained supper club music. Maybe they were told to record in that manner by the record company executives.

Derek Norris looks like a Anglo Indian given his Caucasian features. The rest of the band are Indians and includes a Muslim, a Hindu and two Christians.

  1. Oops, the title of the song is of course “Escape” and not “Mustang”. And I just noticed that one band member’s son had left some comments on that blog since I last visited it…

    1. Hi Daryl

I live in the USA too. I have loved the Escape since childhood and I have a 45rpm LP safely stored in my collection which I hear every day.

Let me know if I can call you or meet you. I I’ve in Santa Clara

    2. Hi Darryl,
Luke here from SJ BHS ( small twin ). I’ve been keeping in touch with Kittu. Good to see your picture.

  2. I say a couple of lifetimes ago because I knew Derek Norris and even had a copy of this record and Escape featured on it. They were a really talented group and Derk who has retired and living in Western Australia now plays the sax with an older group also called the Mustangs. I must say he sings now too – it was great to see him doing what he really loves at the VIIIth World Anglo Indian Reunion in Perth Western Australia …. took me back to the halcyon days of our youth in my beloved India.

  3. Joseph, I would love a copy of this if possible – believe it or not, mine was stolen at a party in Sydney, Australia!!

  4. Hello Ram, Yes, It’s Haroon, Rashad’s brother. It is good to hear from you. I trust that you are well. This site has got some interest as The Mustangs are planning a tour of Chennai and Bangalore in Jan 2011. Do keep in touch -my address is: capl@bigblue.net.au. Best Wsihes, Haroon, Melbourne

  11. Hey All,

I’m curious if anyone remembers a different band called The Mustangs from Dallas, TX? They would have been around in 1967-68 for sure. At least two members are black. I think one was named Monte. I’m trying to find out any information I can for them. It seems that The Mustangs was a fairly popular name for bands back in the day!

It’s really cool to see some members have reunited from this site. The internet is such a small world!

    Kim

  12. hi Ram,

I still remember you and Rashad fondly! I have tracked down Ebby, Jayraman, Alfie and Ashley so it’s time for a battle of the bands! Hats off to everyone who made life so much fun way back. I’m in NYC but in Bangy for a month.

  15. I love this song and have been hearing it since i was a child. This was my father’s favorite song. After 35yrs, i was able to find this again on internet. Thanks for the information. This song is a legend and no one can beat this.

  16. Gee! I finally found this instrumental music number” Escape” by the Mustangs. I guess it must have been somewhere about late 1970s (There was this Cinema theater call ” Hari Laxmi” in my hometown which is “Wilson Garden”, Bangalore, Karnataka, India). The projectionist use to play this EP “Escape” side just before he started the actual movie after all the side reels! Oh! Boy…….. this really brings back memories of my childhood to me……….. Thanks to all you blessed people for having created this piece of music!!

  17. Hi. Haroon, caroline and dear derrick.
How great to hear of you all again.
How are you all and please do keep in touch.
Can never forget wooley booley with derrick’s sax solo. I am in mumbai.
    Warm affection,Mehru Holmes.

    1. Wow! Mehru Holmes, how nice to hear from you.
I have not visited this site for quite sometime and am so sorry for the delay.
How are you and are you still in Mumbai?
Yes, Derek and his version of Wooley Bully were such fun to perform and I enjoyed it as much as the folk that used to come to our shows.

As I’ve mentioned above, we – The Mustangs from the 60s are getting together again in Chennai and Bangalore in Jan 11th and 14th next year (2017)
      My email is: haroon.mcc1@gmail.com

  18. Hi Mehru ……. yes, they were great day and we were all so young….. guess what! Derek has a band here in Perth, Australia clled the MUSTANGS … and I will be in Perth for the 02/08/2014 A I Dance where they are playing. Do you all remember the shows at Abbotsbury? The Gymkhana Club etc…… lovely memories and so grateful to have them too.
I would love to get a copy of their (Mustangs, Madras) music …. any idea where I can purchase?

  19. Knew Derek from MCC (PU) , a wonderful person and musician. Kittu was a friend from Bangalore and he married a friend, Rosemary. Haroon was also a friend from Bangalore, where his father was a well known architect. Amant was a senior at MCC. I thought George Cherian was also a part of the Mustangs??!! Great guys 🙌🙌
