Welcome to another posting of a series of gig listings for 1960s bands. None of these lists is exhaustive and my idea is to add to them in the comments section below over time. They are here for future researchers to draw on. I have also added a few interesting bits of information and will add images in time.

TONY RIVERS & THE CASTAWAYS
Tony Rivers – lead vocals
Vic Larkins – lead guitar
Mickey Johnson – rhythm guitar
Ray Brown – bass
Brian Talbot – drums
Formed as The Cutaways in Dagenham, Essex in 1960 without Tony Rivers (real name: Tony Thompson), the band backed singer Bobby Rio before Rivers joined as new lead singer in late 1961. They changed name not long afterwards.

Sometime before signing a record deal with EMI, John Lyons (rhythm guitar) and Ricky West (lead guitar) took over from Johnson and Larkins respectively.
West didn’t stay long and joined The Tremeloes. Steve Scott took over lead guitar. The new formation recorded a string of singles, released on Columbia Records.

The band was filmed for a 1964 colour documentary titled “Reels within Reels” for producer Harold Baim. The film survives, unfortunately the audio track does not! Anyone know what they played on-screen?
My then girlfriend and I saw Tony Rivers and the Castaways at the Carioca Club in Bearsden outside Glasgow in 1967. They were fabulous. Their harmonies were great. They played Four Seasons and Beach Boys songs. We have just celebrated our Golden Wedding. We have fond memories of the night we were entertained by Tony Rivers a d the Castaways!
None of the gigs were mentioned from dates at the Narracott Hotel,Cabaret Bar ……mentions in the new booklet ‘The Beat Goes On’.

I knew Tony (quite well) from when he appeared In Wolverhampton, low and behold I went to work in Woolacombe 1968 when I once again met him in the Red Barn he was as you said at the Narracott. Then a couple of years latter at Rebecca’s Birmingham don’t think that was mentioned.

Tony Rivers – lead vocals (born Douglas Anthony Thompson, 21 December 1940, Sheldon, County Durham)
Vic Larkin – lead guitar
Mickey Johnson – rhythm guitar
Ray Brown – bass (born Raymond Brown, 15 October 1942, Radlett, Hertfordshire)
Brian ‘Shirt’ Talbot – drums (born 10 December 1943, Radlett, Hertfordshire died 5 December 1964)
Formed as The Cutaways in 1960 in Dagenham, Essex with Bobby Rio on lead vocals (born Robert McKellar, 23 December 1942, Romford, Essex) before Tony Rivers joined as new lead singer in Late 1961. He was approached by Ray Brown and the rest of the band. They changed their name not long afterwards.
Brown left school at 15 and in 1960 started playing rhythm guitar and had been in The Midnighters that later became The Cutaways.
Talbot had as a youngster played trombone in a Salvation Army Band and left school at 16 and worked as a van driver in a leather-manufactures. In 1960 he joined a trad Jazz band on drums. Three months later Talbot met Brown and joined The Midnighters.
1962
In 1962 Larkins had to leave as his father would not let him turn professional and was replaced by Ricky West on lead guitar (b. Richard Charles Westwood, 7 May 1943, Dagenham, Essex).
In September 1962 West left and was replaced by 22-year-old Steve Scott on lead guitar (b. 18 April 1940, Barking, Essex).
In 1960 Scott took up guitar when a friend lent him one had then he started playing lead guitar in Brian Poole and the Tremeloes.

In October 1962 Johnson left and was replaced by 19-year-old John ‘Lon’ Lyons on rhythm guitar, harmony vocals (b. 5 October 1943, High Street, Brentwood, Essex).
1963
In October 1963 Tony Rivers and the Castaways released their first single ‘Shake, Shake, Shake’ (Bobby Stevenson, Bobby Adams) and ‘Row Row Row’ (Teddy Vann) on Columbia DB 7135. A friend of the band Van Doren guested on Vox Continental organ.
1964
During a Scottish tour, drummer Brian Talbot is killed in road accident on Saturday, 6 December. Drummer/singer Brian Hudson (died 21 September 2007) takes over the drum stool in Early 1965.
1966
In ca. April 1966 Steve Scott left and was replaced by lead guitarist Tony Harding. Around this time, they were also joined by second lead vocalist Kenny Rowe (born Kenneth Rowe, 1943, Dagenham, Essex), who had previously fronted The Fifth Avenue and had been in Steve Marriott’s Moments.
Around September 1966 Brian Hudson leaves to form The Parking Lot and former Romford, Essex band Sugarbeats’ drummer Geoff Sweetenham (born Geoffrey Sweetenham, 8 March 1948, Streatham, South West London died 28 September 2020, Lambeth, South East London).
