Simon Dupree & The Big Sound gigs 1965-1970

Welcome to another posting of a series of gig listings for 1960s bands. None of these lists is exhaustive and my idea is to add to them in the comments section below over time. They are here for future researchers to draw on.  I have also added a few interesting bits of information and will add images in time.

I’d like to encourage band members to get in touch to share memories, or for anyone to send corrections/clarifications to my email: Warchive@aol.com

Equally important, if you attended any of the gigs below or played in the support band, please do leave your memories below in the comments section for future historians to use. If you know of any missing gigs, please add them too, if possible, with the sources.

  1. Hi Chris,
A lot of work went into that research!
I played bass guitar for Simon Dupree.
Elton John (Reggie) played keyboard for us in Scotland starting
from 14th April 1967. This was before we had the one hit wonder Kites. We also did a Beach Boys Tour in 1967.. (You have some of them already)
    2nd May – Dublin Adelphi. – 6.45 & 9pm
    3rd May – Belfast A.B.C. – 6.45 & 9pm
    4th May – Hammersmith Odeon. – 6.45pm & 9pm.
    5th May – Finsbury Park Astoria. – 6.40 & 9.10pm
    6th May – Birmingham Odeon. – 6.30 & 9pm
    8th May – Manchester Odeon. – 6.15 & 8.45pm
    9th May – Glasgow Odeon. – 6.40 & 9pm
    10th May – Edinburgh A.B.C. – 6.30 & 8.50pm
I’ve a few more dates and places I will post later.
Keep up the good work, thanks for that – Regards – Peter

    1. Hi Peter

I think this was much later – June 1969. I think it was closer to the recording of Elton’s first LP ‘Empty sky’ and if you look at the pictures it looks like summer time.

      Nick

    2. Sorry for my curiosity Peter but in those years did you saw also in concert FREE (Andy Fraser, Paul Rodgers, Paul Kossoff, Simon Kirke) somewhere in England during their early gigs played between April 1968 and July 1968 supporting ALEXIS KORNER ? Any kind of additional information is welcome ! Thanks for your kindly attention and help too !
      Best Regards,
      Alessandro

  2. For the 8th February 1968 the venue was Rivington Barn, Horwich in Lancashire & not Harwich as stated.
The group I was with at the time played support. They were called Blue Eyed Toad.
It was an Arts Ball for Bolton College.
We had played the year before in July 67 for the same event, when Pink Floyd topped the bill.
    Regards

  3. Hello; I´m Willard from Skien, Norway and I want to add that the group played at Festiviteten in Skien, Telemark late in November 1967, before going to Sweden.
    Best regards

  4. In the 60’s I believe Simon Dupree played at the Corn Exchange in Hertford, its not listed on the website. I know this as, halfway through the session, one of the amps failed and the play was stopped. I went up backstage and asked what was the problem, I found out it was a valve, an EL84 I think. I worked at a TV shop on Saturdays, I rang my boss, he cycled down to the shop, I collected a handful of valves from him, there may have been another valve that had blown too, returned, fitted the valve and off they went again to finish the session.
