The White Hart, Southall, west London

Beside Southall Community Centre, another popular venue in the west London suburb was the White Hart.

According to Terry O’Connor, The Chris Barber Band and Johnny Dankworth played the White Hart regularly during the 1950s. He also remembers Acker Bilk played here regularly.

O’Connor also remembers that Pat Cresswell & The Crestas were regulars at the White Hart.

The Statesmen, who later changed name to The Statesides and Jean & The Statesides had a regular residency at the White Hart in the early 1960s (see below). Future Animals’ guitarist Vic Briggs was briefly a member in 1962.

The Who played the venue quite a few times and Jimmy Royal & The Hawks were also regulars. Mike Dee & The Jaywalkers who featured Ritchie Blackmore on guitar also played here.

Frankie Reid & The Casuals (with future Jimi Hendrix drummer Mitch Mitchell and Danny McCulloch, who was later in The Animals) also played frequently.

During 1964, future Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan’s band The Javelins performed at the club quite a few times.

Later in the 1960s, future Queen guitarist Brian May’s band 1984 played at the White Hart.

The gigs below are incomplete so I would be interested to hear from anyone that can add any further dates in the comments section.

The Boathouse, Kew, west London

Kew Boathouse clubAccording to Don Craine of The Downliners Sect fame (who played there as the original Downliners in 1962 and as The Downliners Sect in 1963), the Boathouse at Kew was run by the Jones brothers and was considered to be one of the best southwest/west London gigs, along with Hounslow Baths, the Capital R Feltham, and Southall Community Centre.

Craine adds that the club had two stages. He remembers that at one gig, The Mark Leeman Five played on the other stage when The Downliners Sect were there.

Kew Boathouse was rarely advertised in the music papers so it’s been difficult to find gigs. The list below is a start but I’d welcome any additions and corrections plus any photos of the venue and posters of advertised gigs as well as band photos (all credited accordingly).

Rhythm guitarist Keith Gardiner says that his band Jeff Curtis & The Flames played at Kew Boathouse in 1963 on a bill headed by Cliff Bennett & The Rebel Rousers.

John Plumer, who played with The John Dee Combo, says that they played regularly at the club on Friday nights when he was doing his ‘A’ levels.

As well as Cliff Bennett & The Rebel Rousers, he also remembers Pat Cresswell & The Crescents playing here whose guitarist was future Hot Chocolate member Harvey Hinsley.

1968

The Thames Valley Times reports that the club puts on gigs Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Considering that some groups had residencies from Monday-Thursday, it looks like there may have been live music every night of the week. There are lots of gaps for 1968. I would welcome any additions, clarifications and corrections.

Ray Brown who played with The Kool until December 1967 and then formed Champagne remembers both groups appearing on the same bill during 1968.

According to the Crawdaddy Blues Band website, the band Sudden Change played at Kew Boathouse during 1967-1968.

Goldhawk Social Club – Shepherd’s Bush, west London

The Goldhawk Social Club, located at 205 Goldhawk Road in Shepherd’s Bush, west London is perhaps best known as being the venue where The Who regularly played during their formative years (as The Detours).

Unfortunately, very little has been documented about this important club so I would really welcome any additions in the comments below.

I do know from various sources that Adam Faith, Shane Fenton, The Birds (with Ron Wood), The Macabre (with Peter Vernon-Kell, a former member of The Detours), Screaming Lord Sutch & The Savages, The Clique, The Undertakers, The Herd, Johnny Kidd & The Pirates, Jeff Curtis & The Flames, The Dae-b-Four, The Meantimers and John Brown’s Bodies played at the venue at some point.

This is an incomplete list. I would welcome any additions and corrections as well as memories. If you happen to have any posters, I would be happy to add them with credits.

Kalvin Starr Movement

This Hounslow, Middlesex-based group was featured in the Hounslow, Brentford & Chiswick Post in the early months of 1968.

Left to right: Eddy Davis (organ), Alan Blackman, Mick Nicholls, Kalvin Starr, Ray Wilson and Del Johnson

The line up was:

Kalvin Starr (real name: Ken Nichols) – vocals, guitar
Eddy Davis – organ
Ray Wilson – tenor sax
Derek Johnson – trumpet
Alan Blackman – bass
Mick Nichols – drums

I would be interested to hear from anyone that can add any more to the band’s history.

The Vectors

Clipping from East Kent Times & Mail, 23 April 1965

Found an entry in the Harrow Weekly Post on an East Acton group called The Vectors.

The line up around July 1965:

Phil Hanlon – vocals, harmonica
Tony Ballinger – lead guitar
Stewart Hanlon – rhythm guitar
Keith Tritton – bass
Roy King – drums

I would welcome any further information on this band.

Besides Greenford’s more famous Starlite Ballroom, the town’s Byron Hotel was also a popular venue for up and coming bands throughout the 1960s. I have started to compile a list of groups that were advertised playing there and would welcome any additions/corrections.

The Pontiac Club, Zeeta House, Upper Richmond Road, Putney

Together with St Mary’s Hall, also in Putney, the Pontiac Club was a popular venue in southwest London in the early-mid 1960s.

Chris Farlowe & The Thunderbirds were resident band there at one point as were The Action, formerly The Boys and John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers.

The club was located at 200 Upper Richmond Road, Putney, near the main railway station.

I have started a gig list below and would welcome any additions as well as memories in the comments below. If you have any memorabilia, including posters for the club, I would be happy to include them with a credit.
