The Gass’ gigs 1966-1970

An early version of The Gass with lead guitarist Stuart Cowell who had played with The Rockhouse Band and would go on to Jon (Hammersmith and Shepherd’s Bush Gazette and Post)

Welcome to another posting of a series of gig listings for 1960s bands. None of these lists is exhaustive and my idea is to add to them in the comments section below over time. They are here for future researchers to draw on.  I have also added a few interesting bits of information and will add images in time.

I’d like to encourage band members to get in touch to share memories, or for anyone to send corrections/clarifications to my email: Warchive@aol.com

Equally important, if you attended any of the gigs below or played in the support band, please do leave your memories below in the comments section for future historians to use. If you know of any missing gigs, please add them too, if possible, with the sources.

Bobby Tench – bass, vocals (b. Trinidad)

Godfrey McLean – drums, vocals (b. Guyana)

Frank Clark – keyboards (b. Guyana)

Errol McLean – bass, congas (b. Guyana)

Humphrey Okoh – alto saxophone (b. Nigeria)

Ian Thomas – tenor saxophone (b. England)

The Gass was formed in May 1965 by the McLean brothers and Tench who soon recruited the remaining three members.

According to an excellent article in the Westminster & Pimlico News from 12 August 1966 (page 7), the McLean brothers arrived in England from Guyana in 1962 having played in a number of bands together and separately, notably The Jokers. In London, Godfrey McLean played The Music Men and The Raymond Bouche group simultaneously.

The brothers formed The Senators in mid-1965 with Trinidadian  Bobby Tench. The band became The Creators and then The Gass.

Okoh had previously played with The African Messengers among other groups. Ian Thomas came from South Norwood.

The band’s debut single, “One of These Days” c/w “I Don’t Know Why” was released on Parlophone on 8 October 1965.

Ferris Wheel’s gigs 1967-1969

The Ugly Z on Rondo

Ugly Z Rondo 45 Down To My Very Last Tear

The Ugly Z are a mystery band to me. There are plenty of names on the labels, but it may be that none of them belong to the band’s members.

“Down to My Very Last Tear” has a cool twelve-string guitar opening and a good band performance full of harmony singing. It was credited to the Ugly Z and Steve Fazio Jr.

Chris Crocket wrote “Kathy’s Back” which is similar to the flip in sound and almost as catchy.

Rick Lawrence, Stuart Richard produced the record, with Richard also arranging both sides.

It was released on Rondo 9158 in June, 1965, as shown from the Alco delta numbers: ∆57098 / ∆57098-X. Rondo had its address at 15101 Magnolia Blvd in Sherman Oaks, CA, and also published the songs through Rondo BMI.

Steve Fazio would show up about a year later as a talent scout for Valiant Records and producer Al Kavelin. Steve Fazio, Jr. also wrote “All Because Of You” recorded by Guiseppi Apollo with the Revels & the Mapes Sisters on Impact 12-IMX, published by Anthony Music.

Info on Steve Fazio’s connection with the West Coast Branch from the West Coast Fog site.

Herbie Goins & The Night-Timers’ gigs 1965-1969

I would welcome any further insights from readers but I believe that in late July/early August, the group headed to Italy for a short tour. John Smith and Bill Stevens left on the eve of the tour and former Pack/Flowers of Wisdom members Andy Rickell and Terry Stannard joined. Stannard had recently worked with Freddie Mack.

The tour was a disaster and all of the equipment was stolen. Most of the group returned home and Junior Kerr, Andy Rickell and Terry Stannard formed White Rabbit with former member Linda Lewis

A new formation was formed on Goins’ return:

Herbie Goins – lead vocals

Alan Roskams – guitar (ex-Gass)

Mick Eve – tenor saxophone

Harry Beckett – trumpet

Speedy Acquaye – congas

John Carroll – Hammond organ

Dave Price – bass

Ian Hague – drums (ex-Chris Farlowe & The Thunderbirds/The Nice)

In the first week of April 1968, Kerr played with his new band Junior’s Conquests

Eddie Thornton, who’d worked with Georgie Fame (and more recently The Amboy Dukes) also joined in time for the French tour on trumpet, taking over from Harry Beckett

Soon after the above gig, the band landed a part-time residency in Rome, Italy

I would welcome any insights from readers on what happened next with the band’s formation

I’d like to thank David Else for generously sharing his own history on the band and helping to cross check timelines and facts. Also, thanks to Mick Eve for his insights.

Dave Anthony’s Moods’ gigs 1965-1967

Welcome to another posting of a series of gig listings for 1960s bands. None of these lists is exhaustive and my idea is to add to them in the comments section below over time. They are here for future researchers to draw on and, where possible, I have added some of the sources used at the end, whether they are newspapers or websites.

Mark Leeman Five gigs 1963-1966

Welcome to another posting of a series of gig listings for 1960s bands. None of these lists is exhaustive and my idea is to add to them in the comments section below over time. They are here for future researchers to draw on and, where possible, I have added the sources used, whether they are newspapers or websites.

According to the Blues-rock Explosion book, edited by Summer McStravick and John Roos, Roger Peacock left in early-mid July (to join Dave Anthony’s Moods) after the failure of “Follow Me”.

Peacock’s replacement was Pete Hodges (who may be the same musician who had previously played with Jimmy Cliff & The New Generation and would briefly front The Attack).

During early September Alan Roskams joined The Gass and later worked with Herbie Goins & The Night-timers.

Tom Parker briefly worked Boz & The Boz People (including a Dusty Springfield tour) and then joined Eric Burdon & The New Animals for a short tour. Parker then joined Jimmy James & The Vagabonds.

Brian Davison meanwhile joined The Habits before briefly working with The Mike Cotton Sound and then The Attack (in January 1967). After working with Don Shinn, he joined The Nice that August.
