Motives EP original
The front of the original EP record.

Five British servicemen stationed near the Dutch border at RAF Wildenwrath in West Germany formed the Motives in 1965. In 1967 they released an EP The World is a Trapezium on the Dutch Telstar label.

“God Save Our Gracious Cream” is freakbeat with a backing reminiscent of “Purple Haze”. “I Can Hear Colours” is slow, moody psych. I was recently sent files of the other two tracks on the original ep, “Ice Woman” and “Baby of the May”. “Ice Woman”, with its “Little Wing” intro might be the best of the four.

David Field, keyboardist for the group, recently contacted me and kindly provided the photos and history presented here:

My personal background is that I learned the piano as a child, learned a little guitar also during school years. I had no band experience at all before I joined the RAF. When I was posted to Wildenrath, Clint Talbot (vocals) had formed the original band with a different drummer and lead guitarist, (neither particularly good) and Barry Beaumont-Jones on bass. They were all serving RAF members.

The back of the original EP record.
Clint and I worked in the same hangar and I used to sit in during practice sessions which were held in the hangar crew-room at night. As we all worked shifts, there were occasions when one member or another could not get time off for a particular gig and I offered to stand in on either lead or bass. I did this on several occasions to help out. I then revealed that I could read music and could play the piano. They suggested that I join the group permanently as a keyboard player. Eventually a second-hand instrument was acquired and that’s how I started with The Motives.

John Redpath was a schoolboy whose father was in the RAF at Wildenrath. If I remember correctly, he was a friend of Barry Beaumont-Jones who suggested he come to a practice session. He did, got on the drumkit of the original drummer, and blew us all away with his drumming skills. A short while later, the original drummer was voted out by the band members and John Redpath invited to join the band.

A similar thing happend with Tom Winter. He was also a civilian, the son of a Security Officer at RAF Wildenrath who had heard about the group and turned up at a practive session one night. He asked if he could play a number with us, borrowed the guitar of the original lead guitarist and proceded to dazzle us with his skills. The original lead guitarist quickly realised that Tom was in a different league and left voluntarily. Tom then joined us!

The band had been doing very well and becoming more popular throughout Germany with both the Service venues and civilian clubs. Our manager was also a member of the RAF and stationed with those of the band who were service personnel at RAF Wildenrath near Wassenburg, quite close to the Dutch border. He was Sgt Graham McMurdo, a Scotsman who had a flair for organisation and was a communications expert in the RAF. The bass player, Barrie Beaumont-Jones worked in the same section as Graham who was, in fact, Barrie’s boss.

Graham had decided that we should record a demo record to help to promote the band. This was to be done at the ‘Telstar’ Recording Studio in Weert, Holland. The band paid for around 120 copies. Some were kept to distribute around promotional organisations and used as prizes during our gigs throughout Germany. The remainder were split between the band members to do with as they pleased. My family still have 4 copies.

Incidentally, the sleeve of the EP record was designed and drawn by Tom Winter who, apart from being an incredible guitar player, was also a very talented artist. The drawing of the chap on the front of the record sleeve wearing spectacles, is actually a caricature of Graham Mc Murdo!

The tracks we were to record at ‘Telstar’ were all written by Tom Winter. We had of course practised them all beforehand, however, when we got to the studio, we virtually rearranged all of the tracks from what had been practised as we had the full facilities of the recording studio at our disposal.

The other thing I remember personally was that in the band, I used a Phillips Phillicorda keyboard which had been bought from a dutch group we used to gig with occasionally. Their keyboard player was upgrading to another keyboard and so had the Phillips available for sale. The band paid for it and I paid the band back out of my gig money! When we got to the recording studio, however, there in the corner, was a Hammond L100. I asked the sound engineer if I could use it for the recoding rather than my own instrument. He said yes and so the Hammond was used.

The tracks were all used at gigs once the EP had been produced.

As far as the reissue of two tracks of the EP are concerned, I new nothing of this until recently. Purely by chance, I had googled ‘The Motives’ which came up with an extract from Sweet Floral Albion Issue 13 under the www.marmalade-skies.co.uk banner. In this extract, Tom Winter and Barry Beaumont-Jones had been interviewed by someone from the webzine. The interviewer asked Barry B-Jones if he was aware that two of the tracks had been released by Killroy (KR1551 June 1970) and had featured on the ’Waterpipes & Dykes’ compilation where it had been suggested that it was the work of ‘Opus’. Interestingly, the ‘Kilroy’ label was owned by Johnny Hoes, the owner of the ‘Telstar’ label in Weert which explains pehaps what had been going on! It would be interesting to discover where the ex-members of ‘The Motives’, Telstar and the Killroy label stand legally on this reissue?

Two members of the group formed a band caled Mr Fantasy: Tom Winters and Barry Beaumont-Jones. This lasted about a year after which Tom Winter left and joined Opus 23. John Redpath joined a group called Emergency.

When I returned to the UK, I formed my own discotheque but did not continue with the keyboard until much later, and that privately at home, not in a group. I have at home a Hammond organ and a Yamaha PSR S900 keyboard.

If anyone knows of the whereabouts or email addresses of any of the former memmbers of the Motives I would like to here from them as I havn’t seen any of them since 1968.

  1. Hi,

Yes they were British, in the army, stationed in Germany near the Dutch border. I have this same Motives record (although in better shape) and got it as a present in 1970 when it was released from a ‘proud’ Tom Winter.

  2. Hi,

Saw this info but I don’t believe they’re americans but probably! englishmen. At least one of them is. One of the members was Tom Winter and he’s an englishmen. Most of the dutch collector diehard psychheads believe they were English…for the rest a mystery indeed! Telstar records did some strange things…not only releasing very popular on demand dutch language stuff but sometimes coming up with obscure beat-garage group releases and even foreign bands like The Vikinks – I’m a hog for you. For a long time everybody believed them to be a dutch group but Johnny hoes of Telstar records himself confirmed a while ago this was a german group from Berlin, touring through the netherlands and caught the attention of Telstar records. Same could be possible with Motives as well!
Hope this helps a bit…see you at ebay again!

ps: I might contribute more with pic’s etc……

    1. that freaks me out – I couldn’t hope for a greater compliment! Arthur Lee was an inspiration to me :-)tom winter

  3. My brother John Redpath was the drummer for the Motives in Germany, we were based at R.A.F Wildenrath at the time from 1967 to 1970, they were the goog old days.

  4. All of the men in this group were English, I know this because the Drummer John Redpath, was my brother, we were stationed at RAF Wildenrath when the group was formed.

  5. My name is David Field and I was the keyboard player in the Motives. Three of the Group were indeed RAF Servicemen stationed at RAF Wildenrath. Tom Winter and John Redpath were civians but sons of serving Airmen at the time.

We formed in 1965. The first drummer was replaced in early 1966 with John Redpath. The line-up then being: Clint Talbot-Vocals/guitar, Barry Beaumont-Jones-Bass, Tom Winter-Lead guitar, and myself on Keyboard.

We travelled extensively thoughout germany playing British and American air-bases and civilian venues, won a heat of the BFBS Top of the Groups competition and then represented BFBS at a huge gig in Berlin commemorating the introduction of colour TV in Germany.

The EP was recorded by Telstar in Holland in 1967. The Group eventualy broke up in June 1968 as the service personnel returned to the UK.

Two members of the Group formed a band caled Mr Fantasy: Tom Winters and Barry B-Jones. This lasted about a year after which Tom Winter left and joined Opus 23.

John Redpath joined a group called Emergency.

If anyone knows of the whereabouts or email addresses of any of the former memmbers of the Motives I would like to here from them as I havn’t seen any of them since 1968.

  9. Hi Barry. Long time no see! I’ve just sent you an email to fill in some of the gaps. So your still in touch with Tom and Mac! Brilliant, we just need to find Clint now. Do you think I need to book the O-2 for a reunion gig!!!

    Dave

  10. Hi I am Clint’s daughter Michelle and have been informed by my Dad that this site was on the internet!!! wow he is so excited but as he does not use the internet I thought I would reply on his behalf! We live in Australia and migrated here in 1969. I am sure he would love to hear from you so e’mail me and I will pass on the details!!!
by the way I so remember the songs but do not have a copy of the LP would soooooooo love one!!!
    Cheers
    Michelle

  11. Hi Michelle. I have recently sent you an email thanking you for contacting this site. Clint was the last link in the chain of re-establishing contact between the various members of the Motives.

We knew that Clint was in Australia about 10 years ago but didn’t know quite how to find him. This problem has been the subject of some discussion between us recently.

We have nearly finished swapping telephone numbers and email addresses with each other and most have spoken to each other on the telephone, including our Manager Graham McMurdo. There has even been talk of us meeting up again. With Tom in Germany, Graham in Scotland, John in Wales, Barry on the Wirral, Clint in Australia and me in Lincolnshire, that will be a logistical triumph if it comes off!

Lastly, we are intrigued how Clint learned of this Website if, as you say, he is not on the Internet?

    Best wishes from us all

    David Field

  12. Hi David,
I think he was at a friends house and they must have googled it for him out of curiosity!!!
Have tried to email you but it came back so have forwarded using your original email…
He is beside himself as you can imagine and really keen to make contact… Have emailed his phone number to you so hopefully you will receive it this time!! As I said in the email he is going back over to the UK next year so it will be so awesome for you guys to catch up!!!
    Thank you
    Michelle

  13. It was certainly great to catch up with all the guys again and within a couple of hours of getting Clint’s phone number I was talking to him on line. He did say I probably didn’t recognise his voice because of his Australian accent now -not so – he still sounded like the Clint I knew, and he e-mailed me a potograph,( or perhaps it was Michelle who sent it) she was just a wee lassie when last I saw her in Germany and I even had a full head of hair in those days. A great bunch of guys indeed and I would like to think I played a part in building their success. The original drummer was called Rod but I can’t remember his surname and the original lead guitar was called Terry Sayles who also did a cabaret mime act; but sadly I seem to remember hearing that Terry had died. Clint hopes to be in the UK next year and with any luck we will meet up. Barry, or BJ as we knew him then, is a bus driver.

    1. Hi Graham

I wonder if you still remeber me. We had contact end of the sixties and start of the seventies, when the Motives performed in Heerlen. If you read this please contact me.

      Twan Beijer

      1. Hello Twan,
I have just also found your message to Graham. I take it you mean Graham McMurdo the Motives Manager?
I regret to have to tell you that Graham died recently. A great man who we were so lucky to have as our Manager and who was so instrumental in our success.

        Dave Field (Motives Keyboard Player)

  14. I would like to thank David Field for taking the time to upload the pictures and giving information about the band.
I bought the 1970 re-pressing single a few years back in a local second hand record store in the Netherlands. I had really no idea what kind of group The Motives where. Submitting the sleeve and the two songs on it on this great website really paid off.

    Maarten Oosterveld

  15. Firstly Maarten, thankyou for your kind words.

Looking back on this incredible journey of renewing contact with a Group which last played together some 42 years ago, illustrates firstly the power of the internet and the incredible service that websites like ‘Garage’ do for musicians around the world.

I see that the Motives were first mentioned back in 2006 with speculation being voiced during 2007 whether we were American, British and in the Army. The big breakthrough came last year when Vicky Redpath, (sister of drummer John Redpath) happened on the ‘Garage’ site and put the record straight.

There then was a bizarre set of circumstances. Firstly, in July this year, I decided to google ‘The Motives’. (Why at this particular time and why never before I can’t explain) This of course led me to the ‘Garage’ site which resulted in me restablishing contact with most of the Group, mainly through Barry Beaumont-Jones (Bass) who had never lost contact with Tom Winter (Lead) and John Redpath. (Drums)

We all knew that front man Clint Talbot had last been seen some 10 years ago in Australia but nobody had any contact with him or knew exactly where he was. So it was uncanny that he too, around the same time as I had done, decided with some friends to google ‘The Motives’. That was the second breakthrough as, utilising the computer knowhow of daughter Michelle, Clint was reunited with the rest of the Group as a result.

So, we will be eternally grateful to the sister of one of us and the daughter of another. Because it was through them, coupled with a bizarre urge at exactly the same time for two of us to carry out an internet search, that we were brought together again. Hopefully, this will result next year in the first reunion in the UK for 42 years of the whole Group including our then Manager Graham McMurdo.

    David Field.

  16. Smiled to see a photograph of myself of your page as unknown girlfriend of Tom Winter dancing to Judy in Disguise. I remember the dress … and the glasses!
    JX

  17. Hi Julia, How fantastic that you have contacted this site because now that all of the guys in the band are back in contact, you are the only person who ‘performed’ with us who was missing.

If I remember correctly, the photograph of you was taken during the BFPS ‘Top of the Groups’ competiion heat which we won no doubt helped to a large degree by your dance interpretation of the song.

Do I also remember that you came with us to Berlin for the big gig to commemorate Colour TV introduction in Germany – I drove the VW van!

I have been in contact with Chas on this site and asked that he pass my email address to you so that I can contact you – where do you now live?

We are having a reunion in the UK this year – all of us and Manager Mac. Would you like to join us!

Take care and hopefully speak to you soon

    Dave Field (Keyboards)

  18. I stumbled upon this site by chance and happened upon ‘The Motives’ section. Out of curiosity I listened to the 4 tracks and can not believe how incredibly good the performances are, stunning song writing and performance all round, matching, if not bettering most music from the era.

I run a British 60s website myself and would like to include ‘The Motives’ but only ever cover bands whose vinyl or acetate I possess. If anyone has a copy of the EP for sell please do contact me as I would dearly like to purchase.

If any of the band members are interested in contacting me, I would again be honoured.

My best regards to the site owner and band members

    Sir Henry

    http://sirhenryrawlinson.blogspot.com/

  19. Hello Dave,

This all happend a few years ago when I walked into a local record store, owned by someone I know. Maarten he said, I have a few records, I think you like them, give them a spin. The first record was by The Motives. I never heard of the group, but the owner listened to the record and knew i would like it. When I looked at the sleeve I thought he gave me a record by a 70´s punk group. I was sure suprised when he played it in the store for me.

He was right. I bought it for 1 euro and was very happy with it (still own the record). I never heard of The Motives and send the 2 songs (I bought a 1970 re/release) to this great website. Great to see that something like the internet can bring people together.

Because of this website I was able to hear the other 2 songs released on the original EP. Let us know when the group is planning to come together for a gig.

    ps,

In the Netherlands there is a newly released record book in which The Motives are
submitted, with sleeves!!! Even thou (is this spelled right?) the book only contains dutch groups.

  20. Dag Maarten! Do you have an ISBN number for this book? I am very keen to obtain a copy! Or maybe you have title and publisher? Please let me know. Hartelijk bedankt.
    :-)Tom

  21. Dear Sir Henry, examining http://sirhenryrawlinson.blogspot.com/ I was delighted to discover two indispensable, though relatively “obscure” single records. They made it plain to me, that the Motives EP belongs in your collection. As I type, I am in the southern hemisphere. Here I have obtained a copy of “The World is a Trapezium” from the family vaults. This I shall dispatch to the postal address of your choice, upon my return to Bavaria at the end of May. Please send this address to “tomwinter-at-web.de”. I wonder if you know, which two singles qualified you for this windfall. I wonder. Greetings from Somerset West. 🙂 Tom Wintr

  22. Just a quick email to give another perspective – I was a very young “groupie”. and lived for the evenings when you played at the Youth Club… Remember you guys well, and two of you had lovely fleecy jackets (that my friend and I used to “mind” for you) whilst you were playing. I did a lot of babysitting and remember looking after Graham’s children once or twice. He lived fairly near us. I remember he had the Sgt Pepper album at the house which I think he said was Barry’s but that i could play while he and his wife were out.. I learnt all the tracks by heart. It really is such a small world, as it turned out that a former colleague of mine also lived on camp at the same time as me, also regularly attended the Youth Club, clearly remembered the Motives, and apparently still has your record, tucked away, despite all the years that have intervene. It’s a funny old world!!

  23. Hi Stephanie. Interesting to read your comments although we are not sure if Tabrah is your maiden or a married name? That said, Barry says the name rings a bell!

We have recently held the very first reunion of all of the band which ran over a 6 day period and was held in North Wales. I am hoping to send a short account of this event to this Webzine in due course to complete the story already documented.

If you have any more interesting information or memories of those days, contact Garagehangover and ask for my email address, you could then send us what you have.

Regards Dave Field & The Motives

  24. Tom, I would like to hear from you. A lot of water has passed under the bridge since those days long ago in Rheindahlen and I’d like to catch up. I’ve had an interesting life myself……still full of change.

Your life has been full of lies and rumours……impossible to keep track of any kind of truth. I hope you can put finger to keyboard and provide some illumination.

Best wishes (and I hope Jen is well also)

    Rolfe

  25. I am surprised to see the names on your original line up.
Dad, Terry Sayles, was one of the original members, playing lead guitar. I do remember Clint, and Michelle, who was only a toddler at the time. along with ‘Uncle Mac’ and Barry on bass.
I have somewhere an autographed postcard from the time they supported The Baron Knights on a radio show.
I also remember the trip to Berlin and the single they made although, sadly, I don’t have a copy

    1. Hi Dawn,
Reading all about the Motives with interest, I lived next door to you and use to babysit for you. My name’s Angela, we had a big family do you remember us. The McCalls? I was going to play bass guitar for the Motives your dad was trying to teach me but I didn’t carry on.
      Regards.

  26. Hi Dawn. Yes you are absolutely right, the original drummer and lead guitarist regretfully do not feature on the photographs most of us have as both were repatriated back to the UK very early in the bands existence. In fact the only picture we have of Terry playing with the Motives is the one taken at the Berlin Gig which features above.

If you have any photos of Terry playing with the band and would like to send them to me you can get my email address from Chas using the contact email in the RH panel.

  27. My wife (Maria) and I enjoyed a BBQ on the beach at Cabarita, NSW with Clint (Talbot) and his lovely wife Jill this last weekend and I will always recall the moments during the past 15 years when Clint would grab the guitar at one of our gatherings and start playing some of the hits from the old times. Good on ya mate!

  28. Hi Ian….thanks for checking out the site! The ‘boys’ and i really appreciate it.
Dave (our keyboard player) emailed me to let me know you had posted a
comment. All the best!! see you at the next ‘barbie’ on the beach!!
    Cheers Mate!! Clint.

  29. I was pleased to find things about the motives on internet. I used to be a friend of graham, Clint and Terry in the sixties. We live in Heerlen and we used to visit RAF Wildenrath to see the members of the Motives. They played several times in Heerlen in a Bar called de Morenhoek. I lost contact in the seventies because I was a member of the Netherlands Air Force and I was sent to the north of Germany. I hope somebody stil remembers me

    Twan Beijer

  30. Hi Twan,

Its been a long time my friend, the memory fades and trying to put a name to a face is difficult. Also we had many friends and followers from the Dutch and German communities as well as the Brits for which we were eternally grateful.

I have emailed your message to the members of the Motives (Yes, we are still in contact and had a reunion fairly recently where we once again played together) and if anyone does remember you I will let you know.

    Dave Field (Motives Keyboard Player)

    1. Hi Dave

Nice that we are in contact now. We saw you in the Morenhoek in Heerlen. Mia , my wife and I had also a private contact with Mac, Terry and Clint. We visited them several times in the married quarters of Wildenrath Air base. In that time i was a air cadet of the Netherlands Air force. We had a contact for several years. After our marriage we moved to the north of Germany en we lost the contact. By accident I found the web site about the Motives. If you send me a normal email adres I will send you a photograph around that time. I am retired as a Captain of the Royal Netherlands Air force and I would like to have contact with the members of there Motives. Hope to hear from you soon.

      Twan Beijer

  31. I have recently been in contact on the Garage Site with Twan Beijer, an old friend of The Motives in the 60s and who wishes to send mr a photograph of those days. Could I ask you to send him my email address please so that he can send the photograph to me by email?
Kindest Regards: Dav Field Motives (Keyboards)

    1. Hi Twan/Dave,well this is another bolt out of the blue!
i too am a bit vague going back that far,but would love to have contact
with you Twan i live in Australia on the Gold coast
      much regards,
      Clint.

      1. Hi Clint

I sent a fotograph to David and he was sending it to you. Maybe you remember us by seeing this foto. I would like to have contact with you. David has my private email address. To fresh up your memory. We used to visit Graham and you in the married quarters of Wildenrath several times. It is a long time ago. I found the website about the Motives by accident when I typed Sgt Macmurdo Raf Wildenrath in my browser. Hope to hear from you

        Twan

      2. Hi, I recently acquired my deceased grandmother’s slide collection and there is one photo marked as “Clint Talbot” taken at the Condong Bowling Club in about 1983. I assume it is the same Clint of the Motives joining the dots on the move to Australia and location on the Gold Coast. The red Gretsch guitar and microphone also appear to be relevant! I’d be happy to email a digital copy to Clint or a family member. I can be reached at debtone@iinet.net.au. Cheers.

  32. Hi! all you Motives buddies. yep i’m still here after all these years. Finally caught up and got online, I’m still playing. Intresting to hear tracks again, The Motives was my first band. I remember the session well, I was 16 and had only been playing drums a few months, it was my first recording and was nervous as hell, The Motives were responsible for my career in music. Peace and lurve to all. JOHN REDPATH

    1. Same John who was at the Stag? If so I was wondering about you recently. Hope you’re well. Geraint(The Ex Stag Barbloke)

  33. I use to live next door to Terry Sayles and well remember the Motives, Terry was going to teach me bass guitar so I could join the group… I didn’t manage to learn but did use to babysit for him, I remember Dawn and Pearl two of his daughters. This must have been 1965, we were living in married quarters at Wassenburg.
