I don’t know anything about M. Ishak & the Dengan Five 55 except that he was from Singapore and has three other songs backed by the Young Lovers on a compilation called Nostalgia a Go Go Klassik.
This EP is pretty solid, with three good songs: “Selamat Tinggal Bunga Ku,” “Joget Si-Hitam Manis” and “Oh! Salina”. I’d say only “Chari Lah Ganti Ku” doesn’t cut it for me.
“Selamat Tinggal Bunga Ku” was written by Johar Bahar. The label describes these as ‘Stereomono’, but they are all actually in stereo, with nice separation of the guitar and keyboards.
I wonder who the Dengan Five 55 were.
Hi There,
as far as I found informations on the web, M. Ishak is from Malaysia and started in the mid 60’s. He signed in 1967 to Philips (with The Young Lovers) and in 1970 to Echo. The three songs you’ve posted could therefor be from the 70s. His real name is by the way Mohamed Ishak bin Shaik Mohamed.
Best, palemovie
Nice sleuthing, thanks!
Comments are in the superlative and Steven Farram knows his stuff. Glad that he showcased these groups to the world. We still have them playing now at private clubs, hotels and 60s reunion concerts. Hopefully others who have vinyls of Singapore 60s garage bands will contribute too.
Hi Palemovie.. i think you are wrong about M. Ishak. actualy M. Ishak is from Singapore.
Hi Andy,
I do have this record, but this post was written by Chas!
Cheers
Steve
i have a massive collection of these records…i have been in contact with people in singapore mostly Joseph Pereira, who wrote a book about the scene there…i hear there will be a compilation coming out soon called “chinese rocks” with great garage, surf & trash rockers on it…
I just met M Ishak last night, he is from Singapore. I interviewed him on film for about an hour – he was accompanied by Zam Zam and Mr Yusnor Ef. Thanks for the tunes here. Hopefully i will be able to share this interview with you in the future.
peace,
Dj Carlito
I look forward to seeing all the stuff you uncover Mr DJ!
