Herbie Goins & The Night-Timers’ gigs 1965-1969

Welcome to another posting of a series of gig listings for 1960s bands. None of these lists is exhaustive and my idea is to add to them in the comments section below over time. They are here for future researchers to draw on.  I have also added a few interesting bits of information and will add images in time.

I’d like to encourage band members to get in touch to share memories, or for anyone to send corrections/clarifications to my email: Warchive@aol.com

Equally important, if you attended any of the gigs below or played in the support band, please do leave your memories below in the comments section for future historians to use. If you know of any missing gigs, please add them too, if possible, with the sources.

I would welcome any further insights from readers but I believe that in late July/early August, the group headed to Italy for a short tour. John Smith and Bill Stevens left on the eve of the tour and former Pack/Flowers of Wisdom members Andy Rickell and Terry Stannard joined. Stannard had recently worked with Freddie Mack.

The tour was a disaster and all of the equipment was stolen. Most of the group returned home and Junior Kerr, Andy Rickell and Terry Stannard formed White Rabbit with former member Linda Lewis

A new formation was formed on Goins’ return:

Herbie Goins – lead vocals

Alan Roskams – guitar (ex-Gass)

Mick Eve – tenor saxophone

Harry Beckett – trumpet

Speedy Acquaye – congas

John Carroll – Hammond organ

Dave Price – bass

Ian Hague – drums (ex-Chris Farlowe & The Thunderbirds/The Nice)

+ Satin Dolls backing singers/dancers Cassie and Candy

John Carroll left about this time to join The Flowerpot Men’s backing band. In the first week of April 1968, Kerr played with his new band Junior’s Conquests

Eddie Thornton, who’d worked with Georgie Fame (and more recently The Amboy Dukes) also joined in time for the French tour on trumpet, taking over from Harry Beckett

  1. CORRECTION: New Musical Express from 16 July 1965, page 7, lists The Alan Price Combo as John Walters (trumpet), Cliff Barton (bass), Nigel Stanger (sax), Geoff Robinson (drums). They became resident band at Club A Go Go, Newcastle this night. That means Nigel Stanger must have left earlier than August/September as listed above and more likely in June 1965

    1. No! It is the other way round. It means that he has joined the
The Night-Timers after that date. He left them either in January or
      February 1966.

      Johann

  2. According to Melody Maker, 26 August 1967 issue, page 4, Alan Roskams (aka Roscoe Roskams) left The Gass to join Herbie Goins around this time

  3. Matthew Warburton got in touch and left this message:

I’ve just stumbled on your list of Herbie Goins & the Night Timers gigs. It brought back many memories. I saw them several times at Eel Pie Island, if not on all the dates you show them playing there. If you’re still interested, I remember at least two gigs that are not on your list. They performed at least once during 1965 or 1966 at the Friday night dances then held, I think monthly, at the Royal College of Art, SW7. And also at the Latymer Upper School Christmas dance the year I left – this would have been 20 or 21 December 1966.

  4. I was at the december gig at the George Ballroom (as we called it!) 1966. I was in a great conversation with I think the bass player. If my memory holds up I recollect hime being of a Chinese sort of look and I mean no respect and we had long discussion on the music scene at that time. Who was he??

  5. Herbie sang with The Eric Delaney Band
23 March 1963 –New Civic Hall, Guildford, Surrey (Surrey Advertiser)
28 December 1963 – Civic Hall, Guildford, Surrey (Surrey Advertiser)

  6. Sorry for my curiosity but I have seen this entry 18 December 1968 – Candlelight, Scarborough, North Yorkshire with The Satin Dolls and Free (Scarborough Evening News). Well THE FREE listed for this gig were Dutch Soul Band or English rock band (internationally famous for their hit “All Right Now” of 1970) ? Any further details will be much appreciate ! Thanks again for you kindly help and attention too !
