Glenlyn Ballroom, Forest Hill, southeast London

Located at 15 Perry Vale, the Glenlyn Ballroom in Forest Hill, Southeast London was a popular venue for Mods in the early-to-mid 1960s.

The Who were regulars in the 1963-1964 period when they were known as The Detours and The High Numbers. Bobby King & The Sabres were also a resident band at the club throughout the mid-1960s.

I’ve started a list of artists that were advertised and would welcome any additions/corrections as well as any memories of the venue. I would also welcome any posters/band photos and will credit them accordingly.

Pete Carter says The Klooks played seven more Saturdays. However, when they turned up on 24 June, they were unable to play and the club closed.

  1. The Rolling Stones were there Jan 3 64
The Iveys (badfinger). Apr 1 67
I played there a lot and went to most of the gigs from 65-67

  2. I definitely remember going to see Cilla Black there – I’ve got her autograph -on 13th April 1964. While queuing up to go in my friend and I listened to Radio Caroline ( pirate radio) on my transitor radio!. I also saw the Rolling Stones, but wouldn’t have remembered the exact date – so thanks for that. Also saw The Hollies. Great times

  3. I can remember , the kinks, the Rolling Stones, and many other groups end of 62 into 63, a long time ago now, l am 72 now

  4. always good to learn of some local history and our great and unknown bands. You may know in Daltrey’s autobiog. he mentions a very early gig at 3 (?) Consort Road Peckham. An old house with what looks like a longer addition out the back.

  5. I went to the Glenlyn 65-67. I don’t know dates, but saw The Kinks, Paramounts when they became Procul Harem. The Action, The Who/Detours and High numbers! The Escorts, the Big Three and the Undertakers from Liverpool All The Klooks gigs as Pete Carter is my brother!I also remember John Mayall’s Blues breakers and Long John Baldry when Rod Stewart was guest. Tony Rivers and the Castaways and Bobby King and the Sabres, and Robb Storme and the Whispers. Great times!

    1. My sister Janet used to go to the Glenlyn a lot and I remember her saying she saw Long John Baldry and Rod Stewart. I think a lot of the fans would have met up in the Alpine Coffee Shop.

  6. I have a photo of a poster sent to me from Rogers James of “The Good Goods” who played the Glenlyn Ballroom on Saturday 13th August 1966.
the previous night Friday 12th August 1966 , “Allen Bown Set” ( Alan as printed on poster) played.
Roger now fronts the legendary Buster James Band.

  7. Hi Great memories i used to go most Fridays 1964 & 1965 with the Penge mods. Saw a lot of the artists mentioned also a famous American black blues singer/ guitarist i cannot remember his name .

    1. I think the American blues singer might have been John Lee Hooker. Whenever he was in the UK he would use The Groundhogs for his backing band who lived and practised next door to me in Wallbutton Road, Brockley. I would often see John Lee visiting the house in the 1960s and have short conversations with him. On one occasion I can vaguely remember him mentioning performing in Forest Hill.

  8. I was at The Stones gig on 3 Jan 1964. We arrived by train at Forest Hill Station and went into the public loos at the same time as Mick, Keith and Bill. I got their autographs (outside, after washing hands). They left us and joined Charlie and Brian (and Ian Stewart?) in a cafe across the road. I noted their playlist on the other side of their autographs and have it to this day. It was The High Numbers (The Who) playing that night too.

    1. Hello Jeff.
Please see my comment of 01 May 2024 relating to John Lee Hooker appearing at The Glenlyn

  9. Im sitting in a pub just around the cor er from where the club was. This is incredible stuff thank you. Im a musician.Eddie Floyds uk bass player.

  10. I was a Mod and age 16 to 18 went to the Glenlyn as often as my parents would allow but saw many of the bands starting out. Great memories triggered by the play list that has been created here. Occasionally got a lift home to Kirkdale on the back of a Parker clad youth’s scooter. I’m now a cool 76!
