Jamaican-born singer Carl Douglas is best known for the 1970s international hit “Kung Fu Fighting”. During the 1960s, however, he led a series of south London groups, starting with The Charmers and culminating with The Big Stampede.
Multi-instrumentalist Tony Charman (aka Tony Webb) began his career with West Dulwich outfit Sounds Five in 1963. The band changed name to The Charmers when Carl Douglas joined them in mid-1965.
By year’s end, the group’s line up comprised Carl Douglas (lead vocals), Mick Patel (lead guitar), Tony Charman (organ), Lee Hall (bass) and Nick Baxter (drums). This formation cut six tracks with Nick Baxter’s cousin, Ken Baxter, who subsequently became the group’s manager. The tracks have been picked up by UK collectors’ label Acid Jazz for a compilation that will be released in late June.
In early 1966, the band’s personnel changed when Ron Bryer (aka Ron Spence) from The Loose Ends and The Revellos replaced Mick Patel on lead guitar and Ray Beresford succeeded Nick Baxter on drums and cut two more tracks, “You Don’t Know” and “I (Who Have Nothing)”, which will also appear on the Acid Jazz compilation album.

Found some information in the South East London Mercury newspaper, which may change the timeline slightly for the second line up.
Apparently, on Monday, 6 June, The Big Wheel Soul Band left England to tour Germany and Switzerland. The line up comprised singer Paul Stroud, guitarist Del Grace, organist Andy Clark, bass player Barry Nichols and drummer Del Coverley.
If this is the case, then Del Grace probably didn’t take over from Ron Bryer until early July 1966. Interestingly, Ron Bryer took Del Grace’s place in Big Wheel
Found an article in the South East London Mercury which provides some information on what happened to Ray Beresford after he left The Carl Douglas Set:
The group was called The National Existence and appears to have been formed about February 1967. They played every Saturday at the County Club in Sidcup, Kent

Tony
Hi Ray
Just emailed you from my aol account. I’ve updated this and the other Carl Douglas & Big Stampede entry. Cream played in Nottingham at the Beachcomber on 23 October 1966 and this seems the most likely date for the gig you mentioned. It was a week or so after the Ike & Tina Turner one at Ricky Tick in Hounslow on 16 October. I think you must have left late October 1966.
Mick Patel later worked with Bob ‘N’ All and then was in a new version of The Loose Ends from January 1967
Mick Patel played with The Canadians (featuring a very young David Foster) after leaving The Loose Ends in April/May 1967. They then both joined The Warren Davis Monday Band. Patel later moved to British Columbia but not sure about his current whereabouts
