Welcome to another posting of a series of gig listings for 1960s bands. None of these lists is exhaustive and my idea is to add to them in the comments section below over time. They are here for future researchers to draw on and, where possible, I have added the sources used, whether they are newspapers or websites. I have also added a few interesting bits of information and will add images in time.
I’d like to encourage band members to get in touch to share memories, or for anyone to send corrections/clarifications to my email: Warchive@aol.com
Equally important, if you attended any of the gigs below or played in the support band, please do leave your memories below in the comments section for future historians to use. If you know of any missing gigs, please add them too, if possible, with the sources.

Thank you very much for posting the gigs for these English bands. A much as I love American Garage Rock, I lover the 60’s mod stuff even more.
Artwoods
1964 – Wednesday night residency at Beat City, London
Early 65 – UK tour with PJ Proby
Feb 65 – UK club tour backing Mae Mercer (US Blues singer)
Sept 65 – UK club tour backing Bo Diddley
1965 – also supposed to have backed Howlin’ Wolf & Little Walter on UK club dates
Monday 11 th July 66 – Bluesville Club, Ipswich (have copy of a poster)
I certainly saw the Artwoods with Little Walter at the White Hart, Brentwood, Essex in ’65 or ’66
Mercer also performed and recorded in the UK, most notably cutting an EP produced by Mike Vernon in London for Decca in 1964. When she toured France and other European countries the following year, she was backed by the Artwoods –
Mae Mercer obituary The Independent 26th Nov 2008
I have done considerable research into the Artwoods and related bands. Don Wison Quartet, Road Runners, , Redd Bludd Bluesicans, St Valentines Day Massacre Art Wood Combo from 1960 etc.
Should anyone have any articles, posters, reviews, photographs, recordings etc I would appreciate anything that you may have. The project I am working on is with and for the surviving band members and family.
Unfortunately, I think I have made a mistake on one batch of gigs in 1966 I think,. I believe they are the wrong year, but have to go through everything again to correct.
Thanks, Tony.

Hi Tony,
There appears to be an additional very low key St. Valentine’s Day Massacre gig on 30th December ’67 at The Bonnie & Clyde New Years Eve Ball at Torquay Town Hall.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/128414570531663/posts/5906540876052308
Poster is “From the Dietmar Haarcke Archive – Star Club City Hamburg Germany.”
Forgot to mention. If appropriate. Trying to locate a recording that was made at the 100 Club in late 1965 or early 1966. A later unreleased recording called Zeta Twigs which was some music and other “stuff”. Finally a show called “Saturday Swings”, broadcast on December 19, 1964 with Sandra Brown. Thanks. I can provide my email address if required.
The August 29, 1964 gig is a bit of a mystery. I cannot find anything out about the two day NORTH SEA SHUUFLE which was a boat trip from Harwich to Hook of Holland with a number of Jazz bands etc. No other details, or if in fact it took place.
Hi Tony – I have added a few more gigs to the list
Hi Tony, the gig did happen. Here is the info:
The Harwich boat ‘ Princess Beatrix’ transported 250 British fans (some came from as far as Sheffield and Glasgow) and various British bands (City Stompers, Ken Coyler Jazz Band and the Art Wood R&B Combo) to Holland to play an ‘all-nighter’ in ‘Houtrust-Rotonde’ in The Hague, Holland on Saturday night 29th August. Also on the bill were Dutch bands Stork Town Dixie Kids, Jack van Poll and his Tree-oh, Leddy Wessel and the Rob Agerhuis Trio and the Dutch Swing College Band. The Jazz-Marathon started at 12.15 (so technically speaking on Sunday the 30th), followed by a Ball from 04.00 till 06.00. The trip was organised by London City Agency and the National Jazz Federation in England, and Wouter and the’ Haagse Jazz Club’ in Holland.
Hi Nick
Found two more Artwood gigs.
Monday, January 10, 1966: -The Basingstoke Town Hall, Basingstoke, Hampshire
Tuesday, April 26, 1966 – The Hala Gwardii, Warsaw, Mazovia Province,
Poland
I found them on https://www.setlist.fm/search?query=The+Artwoods&year=1966
Cheers
John
I was to the Warsaw gig. Hugely successful. Elkie Brooks, too. I’d swear Cilla Black was with them, but can’t find any evidence. Cheers, Chris
Thanks Chris. Would you have any photographs of the show or know anyone who may have some. Tony.
I have a record entitled “The Artwoods Live!”, which I picked up at a garage sale. According to the folder, it was “Recorded Live at Funny Park, Denmark, 1967”. It was recorded by “GoGo records, Espana ’95” The record number is GoGo 02. Both information labels are white and blank. The record is in mint condition, looks as if it has never been played, and the performance is quite clear. Is it a pirate record?
This was a recording that I had been given, which unfortunately was bootlegged. The same the Live in Wales, which was a recording that I made and was subsequently bootlegged. I know who gave it out, so learned the hard way not to trust all people.
Melody Maker notes (pretty certain it was 20 May 1967 issue) that Colin Martin had taken over from Keef Hartley
In 1963, the original Art Wood Combo amalgamated with Redd Bludd Bluesicians which included Derek Griffiths and Jon Lord. Does anyone have any details of shows or reviews or any other info on this band. Thanks, Tony.
Hi Tony
I have some info on Redd Bludd Bluesicians.
In June 1961 Derek Griffith began rehearsing with Don Wilson’s band The Skyliners. In May 1962 Wilson introduced Griffin to singer Bob Watson who formed The Bob Watson Quartet with Griffith and the band made their debut in June 1963 at The Ealing Blues Club, 42a The Broadway, Ealing, West London. Watson was forced to retire due to a throat condition.
Griffith’s joined semi-pro band Red Bludd’s Bluesicians in March 1963 formed by Don Wilson on bass with Derek Griffiths on lead guitar (b. Derek Charles Griffiths, June 23, 1944, England), Bill Ashton on tenor sax (b. William Michael Allingham Ashton, December 6, 1936, Blackpool, England) and Reg Dunnage on drums. They played Flamingo all-nighters and lots of U.S. air bases. They also played as The Don Wilson Quartet at functions and tennis club dances.
In September 1963 Red Bludd’s Bluesicians added Jon Lord on piano (b. Jonathan Douglas Lord, June 9, 1941, Leicester, England). Lord had played with Ashton in the six-piece modern Jazz group The Bill Ashton Combo.
Wilson had introduced Griffiths to Lord in September 1963 at a party in West Hampstead, North West London.
In October 1963 Red Bludd’s Bluesicians recorded two songs ‘You’ve Got To Give’ and ‘After The Bomb’ at Regent Sound Studios, 4 Denmark Street, Covent Garden, West Central London.
Here is some Red Bludd’s Bluesicians gigs.
Friday, June 28, 1963: The Flamingo Club, 33-37 Wardour Street, Soho, West London
Friday, July 12, 1963: The Flamingo Club, 33-37 Wardour Street, Soho, West London
August 1963: The Klooks Kleek, The Railway Hotel, 100 West End Lane, West Hampstead, North West London
Supported Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames.
Friday, August 23, 1963: The Flamingo Club, 33-37 Wardour Street, Soho, West London
Cheers
John
Thank you very much for that John. Sorry I missed the posting.
I have the Redd Bludd recording. Does anyone have any photographs or reviews of the band. Thanks, Tony.
Nick. Do you by any chance have the newspaper copies of these last 3 shows that you could email to me. Thank for everything Nick, I appreciate it. Tony.
Dec 12 Baldock Youth Club in Pond Lane. Guy nicknamed Slim, booked some brilliant bands. Andy Townsend and I were the only ones appreciating this gig. A very tight performance to essentially a dance type crowd. Memorable to this day.
Rick. Would you have any details, photographs etc related to this gig. Any additional details appreciated.
Are you referring to December 1967 and St Valentines Day Massacre ?
This great site has some early ones:

14 January 1966 – Ritz, Bournemouth, Dorset with The Cavalliers

Is John Treais on this site. Just noticed that he had posted a gig in Mudeford. Artwoods with Rod Hanson. Any idea who Rod Hanson is or was. Also John, do you have any reviews or other details of Artwoods shows in Mudeford. Thanks, Tony.
