Welcome to another posting in a series of gig listings for 1960s bands. None of these lists is exhaustive and my idea is to add to them in the comments section below over time. They are here for future researchers to draw on and, where possible, I have added the sources used, whether they are newspapers or websites. I have also added a few interesting bits of information and will add images in time.
I’d like to encourage band members to get in touch to share memories, or for anyone to send corrections/clarifications to my email: Warchive@aol.com
Equally important, if you attended any of the gigs below or played in the support band, please do leave your memories below in the comments section for future historians to use. If you know of any missing gigs, please add them too, if possible, with the sources.

So many of these incredible people’s lives touched mine then, and remembering them today makes so much of my life today still alive in my memories today. To all of you, thanks. As I grow old, I am enriched beyond measure today.
1st Jan 66 The Action also appeared with Chris Farlowe & the Thuinderbirds at “King Edwards Dance” – I have a copy of the poster but no idea of the venue !
It was King Edward’s School, Southampton
A full list of gigs The Action played is in the extra book included with the limited edition of the In The Lap Of The Mods book. Essential reading! Here is the link: http://www.theactionbook.com/Home.html
the King Edwards dance on 1st Jan 66 was the King Edwards School in Southampton according to the blurb that accompanies a ciopy of the poster on Pinterest site.
THIS IS A GREAT LIST, but I have three questions:
Are there any gigs listed when the band went out as AZOTH? And did the band record anything while using that name, i.e. before John Curd renamed them as ‘Mighty Baby’? And finally, is there a tape of the complete Glastonbury set? (John Berg, Seattle area)
The only date they played as Azoth as far as I’m aware was Freakshow at the Roundhouse, Chalk Farm on Friday 5th August 1968. After that they reverted back to The Action. The poster for the gig still has them billed as The Action however.
Don’t think any recordings were made at this time?
Melody Maker has two references I found which talk about a name change but don’t say what it was
The first is the 22 July 1967 issue, page 3, which says that Ian Whiteman joined last week and the band is due to change name. However, gigs in MM continued to be advertised under The Action name
The second is in an October issue which says the band was due to announce the new name at their show at Saville Theatre in Shaftsbury Avenue on 29 October 1967
The Action played at Mr McCoys Club, Bottomly Street, Middlesbrough on Friday 11th March 1966. I was in the support band, Jazzboard. Mr McCoys was the best club in the area and hosted some of the well known touring bands of the day – The Who, Geno Washington, The Shevelles, Herbie Goins etc. I can’t recall much about the Action’s set. What I do remember vividly is the guys in the band playing American football at the beginning of the evening when the club was empty. Here’s the link to gig listing: – http://www.readysteadygone.co.uk/66-2/
Fantastic gig list !
Does anyone know the exact date (or roughly) when Reg left the band ?
The gig you have listed as 13 March 1968 was actually the following day. It was the Release Benefit Ball. Jeff Dexter confirmed this for me on the Mighty Baby & The Action Facebook page.
Thanks for listing these gigs, some of them are new to me!
Throughout 1966 the Action played at Watford Trade Union Hall, always a Saturday night and about once every 3 months or so.
Thanks for the update!
This great site has some:
https://bournemouthbeatboom.wordpress.com/
12 May 1965 – Le Disque A Go Go, Bournemouth, Dorset
16 October 1965 – Le Disque A Go Go, Bournemouth, Dorset
13 November 1965 – Le Disque A Go Go, Bournemouth, Dorset
26 January 1966 – Le Disque A Go Go, Bournemouth, Dorset
I’ve got the date for the Cavern Club as being the following day, 3rd November 1966. Fabulous 208 has the date for the 2nd November as being at The Falcon Hotel, Eltham.
I am looking for the newspaper advert for:
“The Who” April 7, 1965 Dacorum College, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire
I would love to see it if you have it, but if not, you had another ad for this same place, do you know what newspaper it would be from? Thank you!
Hi Nick
Found another Action gig.
25 September 1965 (Saturday) – The Twisted Wheel Club, 6 Whitworth Street, Manchester 1 (The Evening News and Chronicle)
Cheers
John
In this list it wrongly states that on
22 February 1967 the Action were playing – Decorum House, Hemel Hempstead, Herts (Fabulous 208) Thats impossibe, as I was talking with Bam King (The Actions Guitarist) that night at the Chalk Farm Round House and on the Bill was Jimi Hendrix and the Flies. Also on the bill and not advertised was Mighty Baby. I saw them with Roger Powell on stage with Roger Powell on drums, Bam King on guitar and I belive Mike “Ace” Evans was also on stage that night with some othere musicans. Please dont tell me I’m wrong? I was there you weren’t!
Hi Gordon
The date you mention is definitely correct but The Action didn’t become Mighty Baby until later in the 1960s. Also they would have had their original blonde haired singer Reg King at this time fronting the group.
