Welcome to another posting of a series of gig listings for 1960s bands. None of these lists is exhaustive and my idea is to add to them in the comments section below over time. They are here for future researchers to draw on. I have also added a few interesting bits of information and will add images in time.

Formed in 1964 by Tony Knight and Terry Martin, who were from Wolverhampton. Lol Coxhill was a seasoned jazzer

In late July Peter Carney left to join Geno Washington & The Ram Jam Band and Liverpudlian Steve Lucas, who’d also worked with Bluesology, came in on bass briefly before Rick Eagles joined permanently

Future Procol Harum keyboard player Matthew Fisher briefly stepped in for John Carroll in time for the gig below. Fisher’s most recent band was The Hi-Fi Sounds, who’d played at Butlin’s Holiday camp in Minehead, Somerset.

Fisher departed after this and briefly joined The Downliners Sect and John Carroll returned.

About this time, Lol Coxhill departed to join The Gass. John Gummer also left and former Mike Rabin Band/Rockhouse members Dave Coxhill (no relation to Lol) and Stan Sulzmann came in on saxophones.

Record Mirror’s 10 September issue noted that Dave Coxhill had joined but no mention of Stan Sulzmann.

Later this month, John Carroll landed a job with The New Pirates after Rick Eagles told his old friend Nick Simper about the keyboard player.

Starting in early March, Tony Knight’s Chessmen started working with Jamaican singer Owen Gray who’d worked with The Krew in France during 1966. Not all the shows below are billed as with Owen Gray but he was with the band until about early September 1967.

In mid-June Terry Edmunds left to briefly work with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers but it only lasted a few weeks. Fred D’Albert joined on lead guitar. Around the same time, Stan Sulzmann left

The group undertook some dates in Cornwall (late June) and played at the Piper Club in Viareggio, Italy (July).

Tenor sax player Terry Ede (ex-Jeff Elroy & The Blue Boys) remembers both and was a member during this time with Tony Knight, bass player Keith Tillman (ex-Stone’s Masonry), guitarist Fred D’Albert and Dave Coxhill. He says that Owen Gray was with them.

Keith Tillman leaves after Italian dates and subsequently joins John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers after playing with Aynsley Dunbar. Alan Rowell from several East Anglian bands takes his place.

The group started working with Ronnie Jones in mid-March after they’d supported Maxine Brown on a UK tour. The group had been singer Malcolm Magaron’s backing band in mid-late 1966.

According to Lorne Anton, who very kindly shared the following photos taken at the Central R&B Club at the Central Hotel in Gillingham, Kent on 3 December 1967, Maxine Brown’s second tour extended into February 1968 and involved around 30 odd dates.

Not sure how these dates sat alongside the ones The Q-Set played with Ronnie Jones.

Chris Dennis, formerly of The Plebs and Lee Curtis & The All Stars, was living in Hamburg and currently without a band. He joined The Blue Jays and returned to the UK.

During May, Clive Thacker left to join The Brian Auger Trinity and Colin Davy from John Lee’s Groundhogs took his place.

In June , Ronnie Jones & The Blue Jays became resident band at Papagayo in St-Tropez, France.

By this point, only Roger Dean remained from the original formation. The Blue Jays comprised:

The rhythm section from The Blue Jays became PP Arnold’s backing band (Four of a Kind) and supported her on a Roy Orbison tour with The Small Faces. The first gig was on 25 March 1967

THE MACABRE:

Thanks to Peter Vernon-Kell and Chris Downing, I have been able to piece a bit of information together on this West London band, who apparently opened for The Who regularly on Friday nights at the Goldhawk Social Club. Incidentally, Vernon-Kell was an old friend of The Who’s, having been a brief member of its predecessor, The Detours. Ed Hamilton had previously worked with The Crescents with Harvey Hinsley. I would welcome any reader insights.

Downing recalls that he worked with the band for six to eight months (more likely to have been a year). Ed Hamilton, who Downing replaced and who succeeded him around July 1965 when the guitarist moved on, had left The Macabre around July 1964 to later work with Mike Berry & The Outlaws.

Downing remembers that The Macabre featured several bass players during his time with the group.

He also recalls that The Macabre opened for The Who and The Spencer Davis Group in Watford. On a separate occasion, they also played with The Rockin’ Berries in Watford.

Other dates that he recalls are a gig with The Who at Woolwich Town Hall (more likely to have been Greenwich Town Hall on 24 June 1965), several shows with Tony Rivers & The Castaways and a show with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers in Forest Gate.

The band played regularly at the Goldhawk Social Club, which apparently only hosted bands on Fridays and Saturdays. Downing says that they supported The Groundhogs there, including one show where Jimmy Reed guested with The Groundhogs.

The guitarist also remembers The Macabre shared a billing with The Who (actually it was as The High Numbers) on the evening when Roger Daltry’s father-in-law turned up and fight broke up between them (Ed – this was Railway Hotel in Harrow on 11 August 1964).

When the band broke up, Peter Vernon-Kell became a member of the group that became The Hamilton Movement.

The Penetrators from Crown Point, NY

The Penetrators came from Crown Point, NY, on the west shore of Lake Champlain above Ticonderoga.

Members included Dan Rabideau and Larry Rabideau, Kim Joiner and Joe Dugan on bass. John Hoffman seems to have been a later member of the group.

There is a single by the Penetrators on Penstar Records 1146, “Guitar Boogie” / “Coming Home Baby”, both instrumentals. I’m not yet positive this is the same as the Crown Point group.

In March of 1968 they made what I believe to be their second record, the cool garage original “I’ll Make You Mine” by Dan Rabideau and Kim Joiner, backed with a good instrumental, “Splitter Splatter” by Dan Rabideau and Larry Rabideau.

The 45 came out on Ferus Records FR 4958. Ferus had an address of 64-12 60th Pl., Brooklyn 27, New York. Tommy Wilde produced the single, I’m not sure how the band came to find Ferus.

Danny and the Penetrators Ticonderoga Sentinel 1971 — 1971 Battle of the Bands

This is a styrene 45 with the Columbia custom pressing code ZTSP 124958/9. Both songs published by Ferus Music BMI.

As Danny and the Country Penetrators they put out a single that I haven’t heard, “She’s My Mother-In-Law” / “I’ll Be Waiting” on Delta Records in June of 1968.

The band was well known locally as as Danny and the Penetrators. They appeared on the Ted Mack Amateur Hour and continued with local bookings into the 1970s.

From a 1971 news item, it appears the Rabideau’s mother Doris managed the band.

Thanks to Tony Richard, I have the following information about the band but would welcome further insights.

The Fetish Crowd were formed in St Helier, Jersey and were resident band at the Springfield Ballroom. During the summer of 1964, the musicians supported The Rolling Stones, Billy J Kramer and The Dakotas, The Merseybeats, The Swinging Blue Jeans, Gerry & The Pacemakers and The Hollies at the venue.

They soon headed for London and worked at the Crawdaddy in Richmond, the Ricky Tick and the Ad Lib Club in Leicester Square. Richard says that The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were in the audience but did not say which venue(s).

The quartet did some recordings at Abbey Road and then opened for The Nashville Teens and The Small Faces on a showcase gig (possibly in Bournemouth, Dorset), which was promoted by Don Arden. Richard says that Arden signed both The Fetish Crowd and The Small Faces but soon forgot about his group.

Richard also remembers the band played at the Ram Jam in Brixton and the Scots of St James in Mayfair. One notable gig was opening for The Graham Bond Organisation at the Fishmongers Arms on Turnpike Lane in North London. He also says that the band shared a double bill with The Who at the Ealing Club on 26 April but didn’t specify which year.

Richard later formed a band called The Diversions, which later recorded “Fatty Boom Boom” after being introduced to the song by Pete Townsend following a trip to Jamaica. Richard subsequently went into record producing.
